Dr. Susan H. Jackman is a Professor for Biochemistry and Microbiology.
Dr. Jackman studies how the immune system communicates with the body by molecules called cytokines. Disturbances in this communication may contribute to inappropriate immune responses, including autoimmunity. We have found that gene therapy with the cytokine, interleukin-7, can suppress autoimmune skin lesions in a mouse model. In a second area of study, we are investigating how the bacteria, Streptococcus agalactiae, which can cause life-threatening infections in the neonatal period, is able to recognize the human cytokine, interleukin-6, and respond by increasing its expression of stress/virulence genes.
